How will Sweden's electricity supply meet future demand?

Sweden is in the midst of an electrification and forecasts show near-doubling of electricity demand by 2050. An increase that requires a major expansion of current capacity. But how much electricity is actually needed?

Covering future electricity demand

What would each power source need to contribute to meet demand? Choose a forecast and see how the options compare for hydropower, nuclear, wind, heat power or solar.

Hydropower

98% of Sweden's electricity from hydropower comes from the 250 largest plants. To cover the higher demand with one plant of that size would take 745 additional hydropower plants. That is roughly three times today's production.

Building new hydropower is very limited, though—Sweden's waterways are already fully used. Any future increase must come from making existing plants more efficient.
