Introduction

Many of the most crucial issues of our time – from climate transition to educational outcomes and AI – are complex, interdisciplinary, and often difficult to navigate. At the same time, we live in an era where information is more accessible than ever, yet often fragmented, polarized, or oversimplified. Sweden in Numbers is our counter-movement: a place where data journalism meets scientific curiosity and public education. We want to help more people understand how Sweden works by combining open data, research, and visualizations. The platform is created by the team behind Datastory.org, a non-profit organization operating at the intersection of technology, journalism, and education.

Our Approach

We work at the intersection of journalism, education, and design. Projects can range from segregation and school funding to healthcare digitalization, but the method remains the same:

  1. We start with a societal issue – often complex, sometimes controversial.
  2. We search for quality, preferably open data, and collaborate with researchers, authorities, or civil society.
  3. We analyze the data using Python, Jupyter, and Datastory's analysis tools.
  4. We tell the story through interactive visualizations.

We build slow projects in a fast world. Some stories take a day to create – others take weeks. The goal is always the same: to spark curiosity, promote understanding, and inspire conversation.

Our Background

Those of us who started Sweden in Numbers have roots in data journalism, research communication, and solutions-oriented journalism – traditions focused not just on describing problems, but also on showing possible paths forward. We're inspired by organizations like The Pudding, ProPublica, Our World in Data, and Gapminder. Like them, we believe in showing, not just telling. We want to give readers tools to explore the numbers behind the headlines – and form their own opinions.

Who's Behind This?

Sweden in Numbers is an initiative by Datastory.org, a non-profit organization that combines technology, data journalism, and public education. Our team consists of data journalists, designers, developers, and researchers – all sharing the belief that a better understanding of the world can lead to a better world. Recurring storytellers:
